America’s Got Talent Season 18 contestant Mitch Rossell tugged at the judges’ heartstrings with his audition on Tuesday night’s show. The country singer performed an original song called “Son” in tribute to his late father. The emotional track is now topping the iTunes charts.
AGT‘s Mitch Rossell Hits No. 1 on iTunes
Before his Season 18 audition, Rossell shared that his father, grandfather, and grandmother-in-law were killed in a car accident caused by a drunk driver. He chose to perform an original song called “Son,” in which he reflects on losing his father and welcoming a son of his own.
The judges were touched by Rossell’s performance. Howie Mandel told him, “I predict that tomorrow, when the people are watching this on TV tonight, I bet you that’s No. 1 downloaded country song.”
Last night after his performance aired, Rossell took to Instagram stories to share that the song had made it to No. 5 on the country chart, writing, “@howiemandel might actually end up being right!” By morning, the prediction had come true.
Not only did “Son” reach the top of the country chart, but it also reached No. 1 on the iTunes Top Songs chart.

The Singer Released a Music Video for the Song
Earlier this year, Rossell released a music video for the song “Son.” The clip features old home movies of the singer with his dad. Rossell is also show singing beside a stream and visiting his father’s grave with his own son.
On the song’s chorus, Rossell recalls what his father would say to him when he was a kid, singing, “‘Son, I hope you know how much I love you / And when you’re not with me I’m always thinking of you / You’re the drive inside my heart / The reason I reach for the stars above’ / He said, ‘My world revolves around you / That’s why I call you son.'”
Rossell earned four “yes” votes from the judges during his audition. Hopefully we’ll get to see another performance from him later in the season.
