American Idol alum Gabby Barrett was recently a guest on Hannah Love’s podcast Unexpected. During their conversation, Barrett talked about getting together with her husband Cade Foehner when they were competing on American Idol.

Gabby Barrett Talks About Getting Together with Cade Foehner

Barrett and Foehner met while they were competing on Season 16 of American Idol in 2018. The singer said it was thanks to “God’s guiding hand” that they met. She said Foehner was known as “the Bible kid” during their season.

Barrett described herself as “more introverted” and “not good at going and creating groups of friends.” However, she explained, “I remember I had to kind of reach out to him and throw the bait out a little bit to him, ’cause I started to like him and I liked his music … and I thought it could be cool together to do something on the internet.”

She said Foehner gifted her a Bible when they started dating, and it was “like God turned the switch on.” Barrett said reading the Bible “completely changed me from the inside out.”

Barrett and Foehner were together for a year before getting engaged. Seven months after that, they got married. The couple has since welcomed two kids — a daughter and a son — together, and they’re currently expecting their third, another daughter.

Why Barrett Rejects Some Offered Duets

Barrett told Love that she has turned down some “large song opportunities” to duet with other artists out of respect for Foehner. She explained that she thought those songs were “not appropriate to sing” as a married woman.

“Like these love songs that are really intimate, wording-wise,” Barrett explained. “And then, when you accept a song, there’s obligations that goes along with it. You could potentially get on award shows together. You might be doing interviews together. What does that look like on the stage?”

Barrett said it would probably make Foehner uncomfortable to see her performing those kinds of songs with another man. She went on to say that she doesn’t want to “jeopardize my marriage to do a duet with somebody.”
